Hand from Silver Plate

how should this hand be bid after LHO opens 1D?
You
S. KJ1098x
H. AKQx
D. x
C. Ax

Partner
S. xxx
H. xxx
D. K10xx
C. Jxx

If you double and partner bids 1H, what next?
If you make a simple overcall of 1S & the hand is passed out, are you comfortable with that?

If you can find 4Spades then would you be up to playing the king from dummy, pinning the Queen?

Do you mean LHO or RHO - I'm a bit unsure?

Playing the K is the only option, isn't it? If you can get to the weaker hand you can lead up to the King and play it, which catches 2-2 Ace onside as well? But you can't, so what else is available?

whether its rho or lho: Always double on 16+ hands with big suits, followed by 2S over 1H, the heart fit might be a bonus, but the spades are ok opposite almost nothing.

I think playing the SK is only way to make it?

Given that your spade pips are so good and you are really only interested in 5 cards (AQ of Spades, JH, AD and KC) a simple overcall is too weak. Double followed by spades is clear. When partner bids 1H it's tempting to raise immediately but I think that is wrong. 2S is about right, 1S wouldn't be a mistake given that you have doubled first.

I wouldn't beat myself up for missing this game though - I need singleton SQ AND Hearts 3-3. Long odds.

Agreed, then! Bid 2S over partners heart bid and make 10 tricks as the cards lie. Can't you cope with some 4-2 heart breaks? The defence can't necessarily play a third round of trumps so you can still make as long as the heart and spade length are in the same hands.

Even when you've bid 2S you've still built enough flexibility into the auction to play in hearts if partner is long there and short in spades. That's one reason why double is superior to 1S.

Okay so all I need is SQ singleton AND either Hearts 3-3 or the hand with SQ to have only 2 hearts (i.e 10 [or more, I suppose] cards in the minors). Still very long odds. Happy to play in a partscore at any form of scoring
